Play Reading & Leeds Festival Main Stage This Weekend

Just back from playing to a massive crowd at Summer Sonic Festival in Japan and a raucous debut sold-out tour in Australia, as well as two huge sold-out hometown shows playing to 8,000 people at Glasgow’s SWG3 last month, The Snuts close the summer with their sun drenched anthem ‘Dreams’. The track is the second single the band have released since their acclaimed 2022 sophomore album Burn The Empire. Listen to ‘Dreams’ HERE.

Rapturously opening their sets at SWG3 in July, ‘Dreams’ is The Snuts at their vibrant best; Infectious, soaked in sunshine and packed to the brim with lead singer Jack Cochrane’s singalong hooks. Produced by Jack and longtime collaborator Scotty Anderson at Watercolour Music in Fort William and Magic Box in Dundee, the track sees the band reuniting with WL collaborator Tony Hoffer (Beck, Depeche Mode, Phoenix) on mixing duties.

Set to become a mainstay across festival stages around the world, Jack says of the track “’Dreams’ is a feel good track, which celebrates the feeling of punching way above your weight, when life feels almost too good to be true.”

The Snuts are well and truly into their stride. With chart-topping and top 3 albums under their belts, songs that attack subjects affecting the youth of today, and an arsenal of adoring fans up and down the country, these four lads from Whitburn, West Lothian, are well on their way to being one of the most vital bands of recent years.

Currently in the studio working on the followup to Burn The Empire, The Snuts return to the main stage at Reading & Leeds Festivals this weekend.

Title Track Out Today – ANIMATED VIDEO HERE

Six years since the release of their critically-acclaimed, Top 4-charting The Punishment Of Luxury, synth pioneers Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) return with their brand new studio album Bauhaus Staircase – out October 27th.

The album’s first offering is the title track, which serves as a nod both to Andy McCluskey’s love of the Bauhaus era & the power of protest art. It’s available today – Watch the animated video HERE.

I am a huge lover of visual arts, especially mid 20th century movements,” Andy comments. “The song is a metaphor for strength and artist passion in the face of criticism and adversity. When times are hard, there is a tendency for Governments to look at cutting funding for creativity, just at the moment when the arts are most needed to nourish our souls. It seems appropriate that the song and its eponymous album were created during Covid Lockdown.”

It arrives as the band’s most explicitly political record and the crowning achievement of their desire to be both Stockhausen and Abba – born from the impetus to kickstart new explorations during lockdown when, as Andy McCluskey admits: “I rediscovered the creative power of total boredom.”

Predominantly written, recorded, and mixed by both McCluskey & Paul Humphreys (who has recently become a second-time father), Bauhaus Staircase’s other main external influence was David Watts, mainly known as a rock producer who helmed Sheffield band The Reytons’ recent No 1 album and mixed two tracks on the new OMD record.

Ranging from the beautiful film noir ballad of ‘Veruschka’, to ‘Anthropocene’ – a term for the current epoch in Earth’s evolution, to the sinister ‘Evolution Of Species’, and the hectic ‘Kleptocracy’ – OMD’s greatest straight-up protest song – the new album is a broad, electronic, sonic masterpiece that lyrically tackles the topics of the future. The record closes on ‘Healing’ – a moment of reflective calm and a rare OMD co-write, with lyrics by McCluskey’s friend, Liverpool singer-songwriter Caroline England, and production from ATOM TM.

OMD have sold an astonishing 25 million singles and 15 million albums, which has established them as electronic synthesiser pioneers and one of Britain’s best-loved pop groups. Their 13 albums include reissued ‘Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark’ (1980), ‘Organisation’ (1980), ‘Architecture & Morality’ (1981) and ‘Dazzle Ships’ (1983).

By rights, OMD should be in semi-retirement, performing classics like Enola Gay and Maid Of Orleans on the nostalgia festival circuit like so many peers. Instead, they’ve created a landmark album worthy of their finest work. If real life meant OMD were happy to get help, Bauhaus Staircase remains unmistakably the work of a duo who are still perfectly in sync 45 years after their first gig at legendary Liverpool club Eric’s.

“I’m very happy with what we’ve done on this record,” McCluskey summarises. “I’m comfortable if this is OMD’s last statement.”

Presented as Three Distinct Acts

Double Album Delivers Nine New Songs

Listen to Act I: Topanga Canyon

Featuring Buck Meek, Jonathan Wilson & Ny Oh: HERE

Plays Sold-Out Intimate Headline Date At London’s Lafayette This Friday

Margo Price brings listeners deeper down the psychedelic rabbit hole of her critically-acclaimed new album, Strays. Out in full on October 13th, Strays II expands the original 2023 opus with nine new songs that will arrive in the form of three distinct acts, each telling its own unique story of love, grief and acceptance.

On Act I: Topanga Canyon, available now via Loma Vista Recordings, Margo Price is joined by Strays producer Jonathan Wilson, as well as new collaborators including Buck Meek of Big Thief, plus singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ny Oh. Together they dive deeper into the sacrifices it takes to find freedom, the grit it takes to make it, and the consequences that come with all of it. Recorded at Wilson’s Topanga studio during the same life-changing sessions as the rest of Strays – and partially written amidst the formative, six-day psilocybin trip that Margo Price and Jeremy Ivey took the summer prior – all three acts of Strays II further complement and intensify the resilient, resounding, and hard-rocking proclamation that Price delivered across the initial LP earlier this year. Listen to Act I: Topanga Canyon HERE.

Accompanied by a three-part short film directed by Chris Phelps and recently previewed at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles, Strays II will continue to unfold throughout the coming weeks with the release of Act II: Mind Travel and Act III: Burn Whatever’s Left. All nineteen tracks will then combine into the double album’s digital release on October 13th, followed by a vinyl LP release of the nine new Strays II songs on November 10th – pre-order it here. Of the three new additions out today, Margo Price says:

“The title track is the story of how my husband Jeremy and I met and fell in love in Nashville two decades ago. I wrote most of the words and Jeremy wrote the chords and melody. It also reflects how we have always tried to stay true to who we are as people: ‘Love and pain it comes in waves but it was quite enough in those early days, we were wild as wolves my darlin’, we were strays.’

‘Closer I Get’ (co-written with Jeremy Ivey) was originally meant to open this double album with the line, ‘Being alive costs a lot of money but so does dying.’ I’ve always thought it was unfair that the moment we are born, we immediately start racking up debt just for existing. This song was conjured from the ashes of our initial psychedelic trip – sometimes your perception and depth of field changes depending on where you’re at in life.

‘Malibu’ was written with Mike Campbell in his Malibu home after Jeremy and I had driven through the canyon fleeing a forest fire to get my guitar from our Airbnb. I had the start of the song and brought it to him looking to finish it out. I wanted to write something with a country funk/Bobbie Gentry feel, a good long rambling story about the minutiae of the day, like ‘Ode to Billy Joe.’ Mike added the long ‘California’ yodel and the bridge and was exactly what the song needed. My favorite line is ‘love and grief are a package deal, the more you have, the more you feel.’”

Like Strays and its many “stoic pearls of wisdom” (Pitchfork), Strays II reveals more of what makes Margo Price so “unstoppable, unsinkable, uninhibited” (The New York Times). Surmounting loss, trauma, substance abuse, demons of self-worth and more, the songs of Strays have cemented her place as a singular storyteller, with so much to say but nothing to prove. Since the album’s release, Price has earned nominations for Artist of The Year, Album of The Year and Song of The Year (“Change of Heart”) at the upcoming Americana Honors & Awards, tying for the most nominations of any single artist in 2023.

Recently, Margo Price also revealed details of the new Jessi Colter album that she produced (Edge of Forever), hosted a star-studded tribute to John Prine for Newport Folk Festival, performed with My Morning Jacket and Angel Olsen, celebrated Willie Nelson at his 90th birthday, played shows with Chris Stapleton and Tyler Childers, published a powerful, personal essay about gun control at Rolling Stone, met with Tennessean lawmakers and sang alongside Dr. Jill Biden at Nashville’s vigil for the Covenant shooting victims. She has brought Strays songs and stories to CBS Mornings and The Late Late Show with “Radio” collaborator Sharon Van Etten, discussed her memoir Maybe We’ll Make It during the closing keynote of SXSW, taped an episode of Austin City Limits, reigned for 14 weeks at #1 on the Americana radio charts with “Change of Heart,” and released a new version of that song with Sierra Ferrell

Following a long-awaited return to the UK this week, Margo Price and her band will hit the road for an autumn leg of her ‘Til The Wheels Fall Off Tour. In addition to headline dates across the country, Price will play festivals including Hopscotch, XPoNential, Pilgrimage and Farm Aid, where Price is the first female artist to sit on the board of directors. The narrator of the song loves her despite her past and isn’t gonna give up on her”.

Time was received with unanimous and emphatic praise by the media. Clash Magazine branded it another stellar example of a perfectly-crafted pop-soul album, with Retropop Magazine declaring it as “an essential record”, and Record Collector noting that “Time is arguably the singer’s (Mick Hucknall)’s most personal work to date.

With a career spanning 12 studio albums as Simply Red (five of them Number Ones), two solo albums, back-to-back ASCAP Most Performed Song honours (1987 and 1988) for Holding Back The Years, consecutive Brit Awards (1992 and 1993) for Best British Group, a Brit for Best British Male (1993), the 1997 MOBO for Outstanding Achievement, two Ivor Novellos (1992 Songwriter of the Year; 2002 Outstanding Song Collection), some 60 million album sales, 1.8 billion streams across all streaming platforms worldwide, and over 1 million YouTube subscribers, Mick is ready to continue the ride into the next chapter.

Taken From Her New Studio Album The Fifth Chapter
Out September 29th on Tag8/BMG

Biggest Ever UK Headline Tour – October / November 2023
Includes London Palladium – November 14th

Undoubted Queen of British Soul Beverley Knight releases her brand new disco-inspired single ‘Systematic Overload’, taken from her new studio album, The Fifth Chapter – out September 29th on Tag8/BMG.

With a sense of adventure fuelled by her looming landmark birthday, Beverley chose the songs furthest from her usual style and met with their composers to record them. The new single is one of those, following the stunning soul-pop leaning Last One On My Mind, ‘Systematic Overload’ signals a sonic departure as Beverley veers into glorious uplifting disco-tinged territory, partnering with fast-rising Romanian producer Serban Cazan. Listen HERE.

“Systematic Overload is another style departure for me”, explains Beverley. “It’s a colourful, kaleidoscopic sounding modern pop song with the soulful element coming from my vocal and the groove. From the moment I started singing, I was riding the rhythm. I love the tough beats and heavy bass. It’s disco for now, a very different sound for me, but with the high energy I’m used to.”

No stranger to the spotlight, Beverley can do it all. An Olivier award-winning star of the West End stage, Saturday night TV regular on the latest series of Starstruck, and an astounding singer with a prolific music career. She finds herself aged 50, bigger than ever.

Partnering with a wealth of songwriting talent including Diane Warren, Evan Bogart,

Sebastian Kole, Ollie Green and Andrew Roachford, as well as being co-produced with the likes of Jimmy Hogarth, AC Burrell, Mitch Allan & Josh Cohen/DJ Walde, Beverley’s first collection of new music in seven years is a spectacular journey through the inspirations that have defined her incredible career.

Beverley has had several Top 10 albums and sold over a million albums in the UK, with four gold-certified. Her most recent studio album Soulsville went straight into the UK Top 10.

In recent years, Wolverhampton born Knight has forged a formidable parallel career in theatre. Her West End debut was the starring role in The Bodyguard followed by leading the Tony winning Memphis The Musical. At the request of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber she joined the cast of Cats, playing the iconic role of Grizabella. 2021 saw Beverley lead The Drifters Girl at the Garrick Theatre as the formidable manager of soul group The Drifters, which was Olivier nominated Best New Musical, and Beverley for Best Actress.

Starring to huge acclaim as Emmeline Pankhurst in Sylvia at The Old Vic, Beverley won Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical at the Olivier Awards in April. The show also received nominations for Best New Musical and Best Choreographer.

A British treasure, Beverley was awarded an MBE in 2007 for services to British music and charity, has won three MOBO Awards, been nominated for Best Female at the Brit Awards 3 times, Best Actress at the Olivier Awards twice, and Best Female at the prestigious Mercury Music Prize.

Beverley was also recently on screen Saturday nights as a panel judge in ITV’s talent series Starstruck. Broadcasting work beyond this hit show include presenting 4 series of Radio 2 show ‘Beverley’s Gospel Nights’ and two series of the BBC1 show Just the Two of Us. She recently appeared in the all star cast of Amazon’s new live action movie Cinderella (2021) with Camilla Cabello in the title role.

Beverley will take on her biggest ever UK tour to date, which has almost sold out already, performing twenty very special headline dates across the UK throughout October & November, to over 30,000 people. Back together with her live band, expect fun-filled nights where she will perform all of her classic hits, fan favourites along with brand new songs.

“I feel as though I am about to step into a whole new level of wonder because I have come into my power”, concludes Beverley. “My career is not a big shiny billboard poster that gets replaced with the next star in waiting. Mine is a novel, and I just entered the Fifth and most exciting chapter of it.”

3-LP Set Showcases Live Versions Of 22 Songs From Different Eras Of Madonna’s Iconic Career

Vinyl Offering Includes Two Previously Unreleased Performances,

“Sodade” and “Crave” (featuring Swae Lee)

Madonna’s all-theatre Madame X Tour captivated sold-out audiences worldwide with its unparalleled intimacy. This rare and unforgettable experience was beautifully documented in Madame X, her 2021 concept film and digital soundtrack. This summer, the soundtrack will make its vinyl debut as a 3-LP set that includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks.

Available on September 22nd, MADAME X: MUSIC FROM THE THEATER XPERIENCE showcases 22 powerful live performances of songs that span the remarkably different eras of Madonna’s iconic career, including her ninth #1 album, Madame X. The upcoming collection introduces exclusive live performances of “Crave” (featuring Swae Lee) and “Sodade,” two songs that did not appear on the digital soundtrack.

MADAME X: MUSIC FROM THE THEATER XPERIENCE was recorded in January 2020 in Lisbon, Portugal, during Madonna’s Madame X Tour. It was her first time performing live in smaller venues since her 1985 Virgin Tour. Notably, her 2008 Sticky & Sweet Tour still holds the record for the highest-grossing concert tour ever by a female artist.

The Madame X tour introduced the world to Madonna’s fearless persona, Madame X, a secret agent traveling the world, changing identities, fighting for freedom, and bringing light to dark places. Mesmerizing performances of several songs from Madame X (Madonna’s 14th studio album) are part of the soundtrack, including “Dark Ballet,” “I Rise,” and “I Don’t Search I Find,” which topped the Hot Dance Club Songs chart in 2020 to become her 50th #1 hit. The soundtrack also features live versions of global favourites like “Vogue,” “Human Nature,” “Like A Prayer,” and “Frozen.”

MADAME X: MUSIC FROM THE THEATER XPERIENCE will be released as a 3LP set on black vinyl to all retailers, as well as a special limited-edition 3LP picture disc, available exclusively through Madonna.com, Rhino.com and Warner Music Group D2C stores around the world.

With over 300 million records sold worldwide, Madonna reigns as the best-selling female artist of all time. Her celebrated career has earned countless accolades, including seven Grammy Awards, 24 ASCAP Pop Music Awards, and numerous international trophies, including BRIT, Bravo Otto, Danish Music, Edison, GAFFA, International Dance Music, Ivor Novello, Juno, MTV, and World Music Awards, among many others. In 2008, she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Updated itinerary below. Tickets for the previously scheduled shows will be honored on the new dates. This includes all dates except Los Angeles and one date in New York due to a venue change, detailed below.  Getting all shows rescheduled was the number one priority. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts a few shows noted below will be canceled. Madonna regrets the inconvenience to fans and hopes to make it up to those markets in the future.

The Celebration Tour will officially kick off with four sold out shows in London this October, followed by shows across Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands throughout the remainder of 2023.  The North American leg will begin on December 13th in Brooklyn at Barclays Center.

In New York, fans holding tickets to the previously scheduled Madison Square Garden concert on August 27th, 2023, will have an exclusive opportunity to purchase tickets to the newly added Barclays Center performance on Saturday, December 16th, 2023. Tickets for the original show at MSG will be automatically refunded to the original purchaser by Monday, August 28th. Ticketmaster will then provide all affected fans with a dedicated link and a unique code based on the quality of their previous seat locations to purchase tickets to the new date at Barclays Centre.  Advance sales start Tuesday, August 29th and run through Thursday, August 31st. If tickets remain, they will go on sale to the public starting Friday, September 1st at 10am ET.

In Los Angeles, fans holding tickets to the shows previously scheduled at Crypto.com Arena (9/27/23, 9/28/23, 9/30/23 & 10/01/23) and Kia Forum (1/7/24 & 1/8/24) will also have an opportunity to purchase tickets to the new Kia Forum dates prior to the public. Tickets for the original shows in Los Angeles will be automatically refunded to the original purchaser by August 28th. Ticketmaster will provide all affected fans with a dedicated link and a unique code based on the quality of their previous seat locations to purchase tickets for their specific rescheduled event. Advance tickets for all previous Los Angeles ticket holders will begin Tuesday, August 29th and run through Thursday, August 31st. Fans unable to purchase tickets to the corresponding shows will have a second presale opportunity starting Friday, September 1st through Monday, September 4th to purchase tickets to any of the five Kia Forum performances. Remaining tickets will open for public sale Tuesday, September 5th (10am PT) at Ticketmaster.com

As mentioned, due scheduling conflicts, the following shows are unfortunately canceled: July 27 in Tulsa, December 22 in Nashville, January 15 in San Francisco, January 18 in Las Vegas, and January 20 in Phoenix.  Refunds for these dates will be issued at the original point of purchase.

SHARES SECOND SINGLE ‘FENTANYL’

WATCH THE VIDEO HERE

Joe Sutkowski aka Dirt Buyer announces his forthcoming album Dirt Buyer II out October 20 via Bayonet Records. Along with the album announce, he shares his second single ‘Fentanyl’ paired with a music video shot at Baby’s All Right.

What it means to be alive also means coming to terms with mortality itself, and Sutkowski wrote album centerpiece ‘Fentanyl’ about an experience walking to his day job one day and being confronted by a fatal overdose he had to call an ambulance for, before reporting to work and having to carry on with his day. Watch the video for ‘Fentanyl’ HERE.

Throughout the album Sutkowski attempts to wrap his head around the idea of fate and how you can brush up against other people and then leave them behind. The songs themselves play with this concept of light and dark intertwined.  Oscillating between urgency and cathartic release and more stripped-back elegies, Sutkowski faces the reality that while the people he’d rather forget can still live on through music, he is able to move on at the same time.

Dirt Buyer’s new album is a documentation of making it to the other side. Sutkowski grew up in New Jersey, and although he lives in Brooklyn now, he remains “an emo kid at heart,” garnering inspiration from bands like My Chemical Romance and Muse, the latter of whose theatrical, dramatic performances inspired the band’s own vocal-forward, soaring takes. Initially working together as a duo while Sutkowski and Ruben Radlauer (Model/Actriz) were at school in Berklee, the band’s self-titled 2019 debut album was recorded on an IPhone in their practice room on just drums and guitar, and the quietly striking, nuanced stylings earned them accolades far beyond the “fake record label” the two made up to originally release their music.

The band’s new album, Dirt Buyer II, was recorded in February 2020, and represents a foray into heavier material that marks a deeper shift for the band. Now working as a trio, Sutkowski is flanked by Tristan Allen on bass and Mike Costa on drums, a fellow Berklee grad who cut his teeth playing in bands across Boston including past collaborations with Sutkowski. Half-recorded while the band was on tour with Surf Curse, the record finds Sutkowski reaching out for places, people and beliefs to ground him.

Sutkowksi grapples with loss throughout the record, often mourning relationships that have yet to come to pass (‘Sand’) and questioning the fragility of time. “How the leaves have changed,” he intones, repeating the phrase throughout the album. Three years on, Dirt Buyer II is an artifact of a time that is still preserved through the head rush of peak memory; the magnitude of high highs and low lows that are both addictive and transformative. “If heavy’s what you wanted / heavy’s what you’re gettin’ / heavy’s what you needed, believe me now / if change is what you wanted / change is what you’re gettin,” he sings on ‘Heavy,’ ironically one of the catchiest tracks on Dirt Buyer II.  But with that comes the opportunity to see life for what it’s worth: “I’m fortunate to have a thing that’s an outlet but also an escape.”

Half-recorded in his mother and uncle’s upstate house where he turned the living room into a studio, he contemplates the beauty and disaster around him—all refracted through visceral visual imagery of how the physical earth meets the unknown to converge in something greater than ourselves. “This is all a living chronicle of all I want to do, which is feel good and be happy,” he admits. “I’m a completely different person now – a better version of myself.”  Processing the past, Sutkowksi has emerged with newfound belief, fully intact and with a new path forward to the future.

“The album unfurls via a series of taut yet infectious riffs, pummelling drums and impassioned high-octane vocals – 7/10 Uncut

‘The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons is a breathless exercise in how rock music should be played. It’s fun, frenetic, and full to the brim with that trademark Hives humour. Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait another 11 years for the next album by one of this generation’s greatest rock bands.’  – 5* The Skinny

‘The Hives’ subtle reinvention thrills and thrives on The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons.’ – 7/10 The Line Of Best Fit

‘’The Hives have bashed out another forceful and glorious noise for public consumption.’ – 4* The Arts Desk

The HIves celebrate their new album with a rousing send off of Randy Fitzsimmons at London’s Rough Trade East. Out today, their brilliant new album The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons has been picking up acclaim across the board.

To honour the memory of their mysteriously missing sixth member, The Hives held a very special celebration of his life at Rough Trade East today and will return to Banquet Records on August 12th for a final send off. Complete with a custom-branded Hives hearse and coffin, the band paid their respects in true Hive Fashion.

The LP is a supercharged, head-banging collection of tracks produced by Patrik Berger (Robyn, Charli XCX) and engineered by Pelle Gunnerfedlt (Viagra Boys), making it their most electric release yet. The album release is accompanied by anthemic, rollicking single “Two Kinds of Trouble,” alongside a double-drummer video of Chris Dangerous performing “Rigor Mortis Radio” with Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders. Watch it HERE.

The Hives recently closed out an extended support slot for Arctic Monkeys on their European arena tour. In the autumn, they will return to North America with their “incredible, frenetic” (Rolling Stone) live show for a cross-country tour that completely SOLD OUT in less than 30 minutes. They have newly announced a Latin American kicking off in November. The Hives will be the first Western band to play in Venezuela in a decade.

In the twenty-five years since The Hives exploded around the world, they have sold out stadiums and shared stages with everyone from AC/DC to The Rolling Stones. SPIN calls The Hives “the best live band on the planet” and Howlin’ Pelle “the greatest frontman in rock,” and the BBC dubbed the band “a force of nature.” Rolling Stone named Veni Vidi Vicious one of the Top 100 Albums of the decade and “Hate To Say I Told You So” earned a spot on Pitchfork’s Top 500 Songs of the 2000’s. They have sold millions of albums world-wide with multiple RIAA Gold-certifications. In the time since Lex Hives, the band has released 2019’s double A-side “I’m Alive”/“Good Samaritan” as well as a live album via Third Man Records, and embarked on a series of global tours. The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons marks a true renaissance.

NEW ALBUM – FORMENTERA II – OUT OCTOBER 13TH

Metric have released their new single, ‘Nothing Is Perfect’ along with a music video directed by Justin Broadbent. The song is an acoustic outlier that puts lead-singer Emily Haines’ vocals and lyrics at the forefront. Listen to “Nothing Is Perfect” HERE.

Last month, exactly one year after the release of Metric’s 2022 album Formentera, the band surprised fans with an unannounced and unexpected part two companion album – Formentera II, set for release on October 13 via Metric Music International/Thirty Tigers. Both “Nothing Is Perfect” and the previously released “Just The Once” are featured on the new album.

“‘Nothing Is Perfect’ stands out on Formentera II as the lone track that is carried by only acoustic guitar and vocals. We explored many renditions of this song during the recording process, but in the end found that everything we tried adding seemed to detract from the essence of it,” Emily Haines said of the track. “Lyrically, ‘Nothing Is Perfect’ takes the common expression away from its usual meaning, giving substance to “nothing” as a concrete thing that can be actively pursued and obtained: Nothing is perfect/ I’ve earned it/ All absence achieved/ No fences, no exits, no lies. For the official music video, we worked with Justin Broadbent to create an atmospheric and surreal visual accompaniment to enhance the otherworldly mood of the song, with stylistic nods to Terrence Malick and David Lynch. The song ends with a meditative and anthemic repetition of the word “nothing”, like I’m celebrating it and singing its praises. I love nothing!”

Formentera II was recorded primarily at the band’s own Main Street Studios in a rural hamlet outside Toronto from 2020-2022 and was completed at Motorbass Studios in Paris in 2023. From Main Street to Motorbass, this is Metric at its best.

As was the case with Formentera, the songs of Formentera II were brought to life with Metric’s tried and true co-engineering & co-production trinity of Jimmy Shaw, Liam O’Neil, and Gus van Go, this time with the trio guiding the unpredictable process to completion from Main Street to Motorbass in Paris, the studio where some of the band’s favorite artists and sources of inspiration such as Air, Daft Punk and Sébastien Tellier have worked, in the very neighborhood Metric first visited with Olivier Assayas in 2004 when working with the director on his Cannes Palme D’Or award-winning film Clean. The final touches that happened on Formentera II in Paris at the end of the European leg of Metric’s global Doomscroller Tour infused the album with fresh energy and made for a celebratory finish to the labyrinthine process of making these two ambitious albums during the pandemic.

Taken together, Formentera I & II embody an 18 song statement piece written and performed by a dedicated band of artists at the height of their sonic and songwriting powers. Solidifying their identity as genre-defying risk takers, as they did 20 years ago with their debut album, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, Metric’s ninth studio album Formentera II continues to build upon the body of work that drives the group’s urgent purpose, with Haines acting as a lighting rod at the helm, expressing and interpreting the turbulence of life in this world, giving our complex emotions a voice.

Formentera II will be released physically on CD and on limited edition marble blue vinyl as well as sea glass blue vinyl. Metric are also releasing a complete double vinyl set of both Formentera I & II on opaque white vinyl. It’s all available for pre-order now in the Metric store. Digital pre-orders are available HERE. Indie retailers will carry a limited edition clear pink version of the Formentera II  LP.
